Equality

Our Commitment to Equality and Inclusion

At Westgate, we are proud to foster a learning environment where every student feels valued, respected, and empowered to thrive. Everyone is welcome here. We are committed to promoting equality and challenging discrimination in all its forms, guided by the protected characteristics outlined in the Equality Act 2010.

These characteristics include:

  • Age
  • Disability
  • Gender reassignment
  • Marriage and civil partnership
  • Pregnancy and maternity
  • Race
  • Religion or belief
  • Sex
  • Sexual orientation

Our Approach to Embedding Equality

To ensure our commitment is meaningful and impactful, we embed equality across all aspects of school life:

  1. Embedding in the Curriculum

Equality is not an add-on—it is woven into the fabric of our curriculum. Across subjects, students explore diverse perspectives, challenge stereotypes, and learn about the historical and social contexts of inequality. This helps build empathy, critical thinking, and a deep understanding of justice and fairness.

  1. Direct Teaching

We provide explicit teaching on equality, diversity, and inclusion through PSHE (Personal, Social, Health and Economic education), assemblies based on SMSC (Social, Moral, Spiritual and Cultural), and themed weeks. These sessions give students the language, knowledge, and confidence to talk about identity, respect and rights.

  1. Whole Class Interventions

When issues arise that affect the whole class—such as incidents of bias, exclusion, or misunderstanding—we respond with targeted interventions. These may include restorative conversations, workshops, or class discussions that promote reflection, accountability, and positive change.

  1. Individual Interventions

We recognise that some students may need additional support to understand or uphold our values related to equality and respect. Our pastoral team works closely with individuals to provide guidance, education, and, where necessary, consequences that help reinforce inclusive behaviour.

  1. Responding to incidents

Our Anti-Bullying Policy provides guidance for our approach for where discriminatory or prejudicial behaviour is displayed.

Working Together for a Fairer Future

We believe that creating an inclusive school community is a shared responsibility. Staff, students, and families all play a vital role in upholding our values and ensuring that everyone feels safe, seen, and celebrated.
